GORDON, Texas — On Thursday night, the Gordon Longhorns have an opportunity to reach a number few Texas high school football programs ever experience. 50 consecutive victories. Gordon enters the game having won 49 straight football games, a remarkable run that has stretched across regular seasons, playoff runs, and three consecutive trips to AT&T Stadium that ended with the Longhorns raising a state championship trophy. One more win makes it 50.

The number itself carries historical significance in Texas high school football. Currently the longest winning streak in Texas is held by Fort Hancock (6-man) spanning from 1988-1992 with 70 wins. Celina has 68 wins spanning from 1998-2002, Allen with 57 wins from 2012-2015, Austin Westlake with 54 wins from 2019-2022, and both Bremond and Southlake Carroll with 49 wins. Gordon can move past Bremond and Southlake Carroll this Thursday and become one of the Top 5 Teams in all Texas High School Football History with 50 wins.

But perhaps the most remarkable part of Gordon’s story is that the winning streak is only one piece of it. Over the same period, this small-school program has built something much larger. During the 2025-26 school year, Gordon ISD put together a collection of accomplishments that would be impressive for a school of any size. The Longhorns were named the THSADA Class 1A Texas Cup Champions, recognizing the overall success of Gordon’s athletic program (Boys and Girls). Gordon also captured the UIL Conference 1A Lone Star Cup, which measures achievement across athletics, academics and fine arts. Gordon ISD also earned an A accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency.

Statewide extracurricular success. Academic achievement. All happening in a community that was simultaneously facing something far more important than sports. On May 18, 2025, an EF-1 tornado struck Gordon. The storm caused extensive damage to Gordon ISD, including its football field, track, baseball facilities, weight room, equipment storage areas and stadium lighting. Suddenly, a community accustomed to celebrating championships was faced with rebuilding.

The Longhorns spent much of the 2025 football season without the normalcy of Friday nights at home. And still, they kept winning. Game after game. Week after week. The journey eventually led Gordon back to AT&T Stadium in December 2025. There, the Longhorns defeated Rankin 69-22 to capture their third consecutive state championship. A football season that began amid the aftermath of a tornado, ended underneath the lights at AT&T Stadium with another championship trophy.

After the damage, displacement and rebuilding, Gordon has recently returned to playing football in its own stadium. That makes the scenes surrounding Gordon football today different from those of a typical championship program. The stadium isn’t simply where the Longhorns play. It's part of what the community rebuilt. And perhaps that is why Gordon’s story shouldn’t be reduced to wins and losses. Gordon’s staff, athletes, and community have experienced extraordinary success at the same time they were navigating extraordinary circumstances.

Now comes this Thursday night. Gordon will take the field carrying three consecutive state championships and the longest active winning streak in Texas high school football across all classifications. Forty-nine games. Forty-nine wins. And waiting on the other side of one more victory is a number that immediately connects this era of Gordon football with some of the great winning runs in Texas high school football history.
